In English the different kinds of love get lumped together in one word which is love. You might feel different kinds of love but you call it simply "love". The ancient Greeks had separate words for the different loves that exist.
Eros
This is physical attraction,it is hormone raging love. Eros can be as small as butterflies in your stomach to strong sensual passion. It mostly is dependant on physical features and the proper settings. Take away the environment and appearance and Eros evaporates. It tends to be the first feeling of love a person feels and is what people usually associate with love.
Philia
Philia is the love friends have for each other. It is also dependant on time, surroundings and shared experiences. It is a very weak love. Harsh words can be spoken and philia goes out the door. Time and distance quickly weaken philia also.
Agape
Agape is the strongest love. It is unconditional self sacrificing love. It is the love where you are willing to give your life, all that you own and much more for someone. There is no self in this love, only for the other with no expectations of love reciprocated.
Storge
Storge is the love of a parent has for his child. It is natural, necessary, instinctive and automatic love. It is also the love animals have for their offsprings.
Pragma
Pragma is practical love. A statement like "I'll marry her because she is a good cook" would be an example of pragma love.
Now when you feel love, consider what sort of love you are feeling.

ReplyDeleteIn English we say, "I love this car."
In любовь, I guess would be, "I Eros this Lamborghini." Yah? Is that right?
