Little Things of Much Value

"Push", said the button.
"Never be lead," said the pencil.
"Take pains," said the window.
"Always keep cool," said the ice.
"Be up to date," said the calendar.
"Never lose your head," said the match.

Age is a quality of mind;
If you've left your dreams behind,
If hope is cold,
If you you no longer look ahead,
If your ambition fires are dead,
Then you are dead.

The best things are the nearest:
breath in your nostrils,
light in your eyes,
flowers at your feet,
duties at your hand,
the path of right just before you.
Then do not grasp at the stairs, but
do life's plain, common work as it
comes, certain that daily duties and
daily bread are the sweetest things of life.

Robert Louis Stevenson
